Jarvis Zitzow, 57

Fosston - Deacon Jarvis Zitzow, 57, died Saturday, August 11, 2001 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D.

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, August 18, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fosston with Bishop Victor Balke presiding and the Priests of the Diocese concelebrating. Interment will be St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Fosston.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. with an 8 p.m. prayer service Friday, August 17, at St. Mary's Catholic Church and for one hour prior to services Saturday. The Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements.

Jarvis Franklin Zitzow was born on February 15, 1944 in Perham, the son of Erwin T. and Georgia (Wagner) Zitzow. He grew up in the Vergas area until he was in the fifth grade and moved with his family to Moorhead. Jarvis graduated from Moorhead High School in 1963 and Moorhead State University in 1968.

Jarvis was united in marriage to Theresa Nohava on November 1, 1969 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Corcoran. Shortly after their marriage, Jarvis was drafted into the United States Army and served in Vietnam. He returned to the states in October of 1970 and received his honorable discharge in 1971 to continue his education. While in the service, Jarvis received several medals, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

In 1971, he and Theresa moved to Moorhead where he attended Moorhead State University. He then accepted a teaching position in Winger and taught in the McIntosh-Winger and Win-E-Mac school districts until his retirement in June of 1999.

Jarvis entered the Deaconate Program in September of 1996 and was ordained a deacon in July 1, 2000. Subsequently, he was assigned by Bishop Victor Balke to serve St. Mary's Parish in Fosston.

He enjoyed oil painting, gardening, decorating, cooking, classical music and the arts.

Jarvis is survived by his wife, Theresa of Fosston; a son, Erwin (Jennifer) Zitzow of Fosston; a daughter, Kristin Zitzow of Crookston; his father, Erwin T. Zitzow Sr. of McIntosh; two brothers, Theodore "Ted" (Nancy) Zitzow of Dent and Warren (Marlene) Zitzow of Moorhead; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents, Frida and William Zitzow and Grace and George Wagner.
