Reuben Wordelman, 96

Oklee - Reuben Wordelman, 96, died on Friday, January 2, 2004 at Banner Mesa Medical Center in Mesa, Ariz.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 10 at Zion Lutheran Church in Oklee, with Reverend Robert Paulson officiating. Casket bearers included Larry Spong, Earl Spong, Dale Spong, Gary Spong, James Spong and Mark Spong. Interment was held at Rosehill Cemetery in Wells.

Reuben Elmer Wordelman was born February 6, 1907, in Amboy, the son of Max and Katherine (Schaeffer) Wordelman. He graduated from Wells High School and attended North Central College in Naperville, Ill.

He married Evelyn Miller on June 18, 1930. The couple lived in Spring Valley. He worked at First National Bank, then became a bank examiner and in 1943 began farming. He also worked as an income tax preparer, an insurance agent, a school bus driver, and a real estate broker. He and Evelyn spent their retirement years in Mesa, Ariz. and Crosslake and Garrison. She preceded him in death on October 9, 1984.

On August 21, 1987 he married Dorothy Spong. They lived in Oklee and Mesa and Apache Junction, Ariz.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gilbert, Ariz. In his later years he enjoyed golfing, woodcarving, fishing, leading Bible studies, and watching sporting events.

Reuben is survived by his wife, Dorothy; one daughter, Lois (Roger) Carson of Mesa, Ariz.; two sons, Dale (Lorrine) of Rochester and Jon (Marlene) of Kasson; one step-daughter, Esther (Horner) Saetre of Battle Lake; five step-sons, George (Charlotte) Spong of Paso Robies, Calif., Larry (Norma) Spong of Thief River Falls, Earl Spong of Great Falls, Mont., Dale (Susan) Spong of Grand Forks, N.D. and Gary Spong of Fargo, N.D.; nine grandchildren; sixteen step grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; eighteen step-great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and five great-great-step-grandchildren,

He was preceded in death by his first wife; one step-son; two grandsons; one sister; and one brother.
