Mae Williams, 89

Edina - Mae Williams, 89, died Sunday, October 14, 2001 at Heritage of Edina.

A memorial service was held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, October 19, at Werness Brothers Chapel in Bloomington. Interment was in Fort Snelling Cemetery.

Mae Gram was born on May 21, 1912 in Ransom County of North Dakota, the daughter of Delia Ann (Hall) and Benson Perley Gram. She grew up in the Leonard, N.D. area and northwestern Minnesota where she attended Middle River High School. After high school, she worked as a cook for road crews in northwestern Minnesota and Montana. She also worked as a waitress at a Thief River Falls restaurant.

While working in Thief River Falls, Mae met Vernon Williams. Vernon was drafted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and trained at Camp Peary, Magruder, Va. Mae joined Vernon, and the couple married on September 20, 1943 in Arlington, Va. Vernon was killed on April 16, 1945 on the island of Iwo Jima. After Vernon's death, Mae remained on the east coast where she worked at various jobs, including a drug store clerk, post office employee and secretary for an insurance firm in Washington, D.C. After her retirement in 1976, she moved to Roseville to be closer to relatives. She later moved to Bloomington where she enjoyed the family activities of her nephew, Dale Gram.

In addition to Gram, Mae is survived a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three sisters, Alice, Myrtle and Stella; and five brothers, Alfred, Milford, Lawrence, Buel and Ray.
