Leonard Westlund, 102

Cambridge - Leonard Westlund, 102, formerly of Roseau County, died on Saturday, March 15, 2003 in Cambridge.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 19 at Grandview Christian Home with the Rev. Paul Reynolds officiating. Music was provided by RuthAnn Telander and Nancy Peabody. Casketbearers were David Westlund, Brian Westlund, Nathan Westlund, Peter Carlson, Casey Johnson and Gary Rosch. Interment was in Lakewood Cemtery in Minneapolis.

Leonard Andrew Westlund was born on December 26, 1900, the son of Lewis and Molly (Anderson) Westlund, in Roseau County. He attended country school and graduated from the eighth grade. As a young boy, he worked in the harvest fields in and around Strathcona. When he was 20, he left for the big city, and attended Dunwoody, where he learned the electrician trade. He served our country with the United States Navy during World War II and returned to begin a partnership in the neon sign business in St. Paul. Leonard owned a five-acre hobby farm in Minneapolis, where he raised many vegetables, berries and flowers, which he shared with friends and family.

On October 5, 1957, he married Ione Overland. In 1989, after their retirement, they moved to Mill Ridge Commons, where they spent several years together, until Ione's death in 1996.

At the age of 102, Leonard was still active. He was very involved at the Isanti Senior Center and made weekly trips there to play cards with his friends. He also attended the monthly potlucks to visit and enjoy the delicacies of several of the Scandinavian cooks in Isanti County.

Survivors include his brother, Victor; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Edna Kotschevar, Ruth Stone, Anna Hektner, Ella Sommerfeld, Helen Granville; step-sister, Alice Nenow; step-brothers, Roy Lund and Evertt Lund; and his wife, Ione.
