Harvey Welle, 80

Mahnomen - Harvey Welle, 80, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001 at Scottsdale, Ariz. from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 12, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Mahnomen with Father Rick Lambert officiating. Della Meisinger was the soloist, and Lavon Cook was the song leader. Casketbearers were grandchildren Jeff Zimmel, Shane Geray, Jared Geray, Trevis Rothschadl, Victoria Dewey and Michael Maier. Honorary casketbearers were members of the Catholic Aid Society. Interment was in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery at Beaulieu with Anderson Funeral Home of Mahnomen in charge of the arrangements.

Harvey Joseph Welle was born on February 21, 1921 on a farm east of Mahnomen, the son of Joseph H. and Elizabeth (Eveslage) Welle. He grew up in the Mahnomen area and attended Ahmann School. As a young man, he farmed with his father and drove truck in the area.

On June 5, 1945, Harvey was married to Shirley Winkler at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Beaulieu. Together, the couple owned and operated the family farm until retiring in 1973. In 1975, Harvey built Welle Apartments, the DAC and Dr. LaDue's office in Mahnomen. From 1978 until 1984, he ran his own trucking business, hauling grain throughout North Dakota and Minnesota. In 1993, Harvey and Shirley moved into Mahnomen. For the past four years, they had wintered in the south.

He was member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Mahnomen, the Farmer's Union board and Catholic Aid Association.

Harvey owned two planes and enjoyed flying. He spoke fluent German and traveled to Germany with his daughters. He also enjoyed playing cards, rebuilding old cars and tractors, attending sales, fishing and spending time with his daughters and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Mahnomen; five daughters, Bonnie (Harley) Zimmel of Evansville, Charlene (Cletus) Geray of Waubun, Diane (Rodney) Rothschadl of Thief River Falls, MeLinda (Doug) Dewey of Fergus Falls and Geraldine (Dave) Maier of Bismarck, N.D.; a foster son, David Beaulieu of Mahnomen; three brothers, Edwin (Lorraine) of Detroit Lakes, Eugene (Elaine) of Bismarck, N.D. and Ray (Dorothy) of Nevis; a sister, Marie (Ray) Eickstadt of Spokane, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Mary; and a brother, Art. A00003B2000MA14
