Thief
River Falls - Henry Walton, 90,died Thursday,
March 21, 2002 at Karlstad Healthcare Center in
Karlstad.
A
funeral service will be held on
Monday,
April 1, at First Lutheran Church in Middle River
with Rev. Mary Ronning officiating. Lois Peterson
will be the organist, and Meredith Walton will be
the soloist. Casketbearers will be Wallace Walton,
Charles Walton, William Halme, Kevin Halme, Randy
Rose, and Brian Walton. Interment will be in First
Lutheran Cemetery in Middle River.
Visitation
will be held for one hour prior to the service.
Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls is in
charge of the arrangements.
Henry
Eugene Walton was born on February 4, 1912 in
Virginia, the son of Charles and Amanda ((Ojala)
Walton. When Henry was a year old, the family moved
to a farm in Cedar Township near Middle River. He
was baptized and confirmed at the Finnish Lutheran
Church and attended school at Middle River. As he
grew up, Henry worked on the family farm. He worked
at several locations, including Walton's Garage
with his brother, Waino.
On
April 12, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and served
in the 776th Tank Destroyer Battalion as part of
the 3rd Army under General Patton. Most of his
service was overseas in North Africa, Sicily,
Italy, France, and Germany. Following his honorable
discharge on September 25, 1945, he worked at
Walton's Garage and also drove school bus for 20
years.
On
June 19, 1946, Henry married Lavon Dorothy Olson.
The couple made their home in Middle River until
June of 1996 when they moved to Thief River Falls.
Henry moved to Karlstad Healthcare Center in
December 2001.
He
was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Middle
River Fire Department for 44 years, Hans E. Lian
American Legion Post 444 in Middle River, and
Middle River Community Club. Henry also served on
the Middle River City Council.
Survivors
include his wife, Lavon of Thief River Falls; a
daughter, Lynn (Tom) Gullickson of Middle River;
three sisters, Taina Hicks of Fort Belvoir, Va.,
Saima Halme of Thief River Falls, and Ruth Affolter
of Bellevue, Wash., three grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; and two step
great-grandchildren.
Henry
was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey; his
parents; and three brothers, Waino, John, and
Wesley.
