Lawrence Waldal, 87

Plummer - Lawrence Waldal, 87, died on Monday, May 19, 2003 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 23 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plummer with the Rev. Gary Graff officiating. Linda Olson was the organist and Ross Arlt was the soloist. Casketbearers were Lawrence's grandsons, Shayne Waldal, Nick Waldal, Scott Waldal, Larry Waldal, Tim Kalbakdalen and Steve Seng. Interment was in Emardville Cemetery in rural Plummer.

Lawrence Waldal was born on November 13, 1915, the son of Alfred J. and Clara (Olson) Waldal, in Emardville Township, near Plummer. He attended country school in Emardville Township.

On November 19, 1936, he married Selma Emma Tranby in Red Lake Falls. They farmed near Plummer for a time. They also managed a mink farm near Plummer and Lawrence worked in the logging camps. He also worked construction, so the couple lived in various places, returning to Plummer. Lawrence was a heavy equipment mechanic for most of his life. The couple also owned and operated an auto garage and auto sales in Plummer. In the later years, he farmed with his daughter, Betty. Lawrence enjoyed eating out and spending time with his family. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church in Plummer.

Survivors include seven children, Melvin (Barbara) of Palmer, Alaska, Harold (Beverly) of Surprise, Ariz., Joyce (Jim) Kalbakdalen of Red Lake Falls, Ronald of Plummer, Betty (Oscar) Degelder of Plummer, Larry (Lana) of Bemidji, and Kenneth (Judy) of Antioch, Ill.; special friend, Thelma Bendickson of Thief River Falls; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandson; five sisters, Marie Seeger of Red Lake Falls, Beatrice (Clayton) Larson of Plummer, Rosella (Kenneth) McDonald of Gary, Ind., Helen (Wayne) Ober of Flat Rock, Mich., and Carolyn (Wes) Myhre of Brooks; and several nieces and nephews.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife, Emma; daughter, Barbara Rau; a grandson; his parents; sisters, Selma Waldal and Clara Auch; and brothers, James and Alvin Waldal.
