Walter Vettleson, 80

Trail - Walter Vettleson, 80, died on Monday, March 24, 2003 at his home in rural Trail.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 28 at Oak Park Lutheran Church in Oklee with the Rev. Joseph Abrahamson officiating. Larissa Chervestad will be the organist. Interment will be in Clearwater Lutheran Cemetery in rural Oklee. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 27 at the Johnson Funeral Service in Oklee with an 8 p.m. prayer service and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Walter Theodore Vettleson was born on August 18, 1922, the son of Willie and Mathilda (Florence) Vettleson, in Erie. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed at Clearwater Lutheran Church. He grew up and attended the Old 47 School in Highlanding Township of Pennington County.

On August 28, 1954, he married Shirley Ann Pederson in Trail. The couple made their home in Chester Township of Polk County, where they have since resided. Walter farmed and worked construction at Mark's Sand and Gravel in Fergus Falls and at Northern Sand and Gravel in Trail. He sang and played rhythm guitar and was instrumental in starting the Stardust Band. He was a self-taught musician who played with many other area musicians throughout his life. Walter was the clerk of Chester Township for 43 years. He liked music, hunting, gardening, playing cards and especially spending time with family and his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Ann; seven children, Deborah (James) DuChamp of Plummer, Wayne (Debra) Vettleson of Trail, Sheila (Terry) Horn of Gonvick, Kevin (Kim Ellen) Vettleson of Trail, Michael (Brenda) Vettleson of Roseau, Lori (Stephen) Raebel of Oakdale, and Kim (Rhonda) Vettleson of Oklee; 20 grandchildren; one great-grandson; a brother, Myrl Vettleson of Plummer; a sister-in-law, Lorina Vettleson of Oklee; a brother-in-law, Bennie Howard of Butte, Mont.; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Myrtle Howard; brothers, Herbert Sr., Wilton, Lealand, Joseph, and a brother in infancy. A00003B2003MR26
