Bernice Jane Carruthers was born on August 11, 1923 in Pomona, Calif., the daughter of Harold and Helen (Adamson) Carruthers. She was baptized in Pomona and attended Roosevelt Grade School and Pomona High School, graduating in 1941. She then attended San Diego General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1944.

After graduating from nursing school, she worked for the Army. Bernice met Myrl Vettleson in Reno, Nev. while he was serving in the military, and they were married on April 11, 1945 in Reno. The couple purchased a farm near Plummer, and Bernice began working at St. Luke's Hospital in Thief River Falls in 1948. She worked as the head obstetrics nurse for 12 years and then as house supervisor until her retirement in 1971. She also did a lot of private duty nursing in the area. After retirement, the couple wintered in Parker, Ariz. and spent the summers in Minnesota.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliaries in Thief River Falls and Plummer.

Bernice enjoyed quilting, sewing, knitting, crossword puzzles, big band music and especially, spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Myrl; a son, Mark (Anita) Vettleson of Brooks; two daughters, Dana (Jerry) Jenkins of Newfolden and Ilene Bergerson of Thief River Falls; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Neil Carruthers of Benson, Ariz.; and a half brother, Gerald Carruthers of Los Angeles, Calif.
