Irene Vesledahl, 65

Winger - Irene Vesledahl, 65, died Monday, March 26, 2001 at Casa Grande Regional Medical Center in Casa Grande, Ariz.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 31, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church in Winger with Rev. Wes Johanson officiating. Marion Tollefson was the pianist, and special music was provided by Ray and Marvie Stromstad. Casketbearers were Brian Hanson, Steve Hanson, Bob Vesledahl, Steve Vesledahl, Tom Vesledahl and Don Staehnke. Honorary casketbearers were Karen and Rodd Wagner, Kim and Whitey Parkin, Kent Olson and Connie Mowry. Interment was in Winger City Cemetery with Mattson Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Irene Grindeland was born on May 19, 1935 in Thief River Falls, the daughter of Gilman and Anna (Hamburg) Grindeland. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. She attended school in Thief River Falls, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1953.

After graduation, Irene moved to Winger where she met her husband, Joel Vesledahl. The couple was united in marriage on October 2, 1954. They farmed near Winger for several years. After their children grew older, Irene began working at American Crystal in Crookston, retiring in 1994. Joel died in 1994.

She was an active 4-H leader, Sunday school teacher and choir member.

Irene enjoyed crocheting, making lefse, playing all sorts of board, card and computer games and especially cooking for and spending time with her children, grandchildren and friends.

Survivors include her fiance, Dean Olson of Erskine; three sons, David (Theresa) Vesledahl of St. Joseph, Paul (Kristin) Vesledahl of Moorhead and Jon (Wendy) Vesledahl of Ada; five daughters, Devra (Steve) Carlson of McIntosh, Gwen (Bruce) Benbo of Winger, Amy Jo (Gary) Wierschke of Detroit Lakes, Jane (Dale) Olson of Winger and Tracey (Jim) Strom of Moorhead; a sister, Sara Jane (Don) Hanson of Shoreview; 25 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a daughter, Jeannie; two brothers, Duane Anderson and Eugene Grindeland; and a granddaughter, Megan Olson.
