Thief
River Falls - Charlie Vander Weg, 85, died on
Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at Northwest Medical Center
in Thief River Falls.
Charlie
Vander Weg was born on February 21, 1916 in
Tzummarum, Holland, to the late John and Theresa
(DeHaan) Vander Weg. He was born "Sjouke", and
later changed his name to Charlie when his family
migrated to the United States in 1926. His family
settled in Oakes, N.D., and later moved to the
Crookston area where they settled on a
farm.
On
October 13, 1942 he entered the United States Army
at Ft. Snelling and was honorably discharged on
November 25, 1945 at Camp McCoy, Wisc. Charlie was
corporal in combat infantry and was awarded the
Purple Heart. On December 14, 1945 Charlie was
united in marriage to Gracie Ester Witt in Red Lake
Falls. In 1947 he and his wife moved west of St.
Hilaire in Polk Centre township, Pennington county,
and farmed for many years on the family farm. He
also drove school bus for the St. Hilaire school
and later when they consolidated, he drove for the
Thief River Falls School District, retiring after
20 years of service.
Charlie
often worked as a mechanic, fixing anything that
his neighbors and friends would ask him to fix.
This included cars, tractors, trucks and snow
blowers.
He
is survived by his wife, Gracie; two daughters:
Judy (John) De Wald of Shelbyville, Tenn., and
Linda (Steven) Lehr of Thief River Falls; three
grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three
sisters-in-law: Anne Vander Weg of Red Lake Falls,
Lorraine Vander Weg of Crookston, and Millie Vander
Bolt of Virginia; and many nieces and
nephews.
Charlie
was preceded in death by his parents; three
brothers: Jacob, Clarence and Albert; two
brothers-in-law: James Pahlen and Axel "Ted"
Naplin; one niece, and two nephews.
Arrangements
were with Green Funeral Home, Thief River
Falls.
