Martin Van Der Veen, 86

Sauk Centre - Martin Van Der Veen, 86, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at St. Michael's Nursing Home in Sauk Centre.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 1, at 3 p.m. at First United Church of Christ in Sauk Centre.

Martin Van Der Veen was born on October 25, 1915 in Raymond. At a young age, he was adopted by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arend Van Der Veen. Martin grew up in Boyden, Iowa and graduated from Boyden High School.

On June 29, 1937, he was united in marriage to June M. Van Westerhuizen in Sioux Falls, S.D. The couple resided in Sioux Falls for 11 years before moving to the Glenwood/Brooten area where they farmed. Following their retirement in 1978, they moved to Kandota Township of Todd County. Since June of 2000, Martin had resided at St. Michael's Nursing Home in Sauk Centre. His wife died on March 29, 2002.

Martin was a member of First United Church of Christ in Sauk Centre. He was a former church elder and served as president of the Brooten and Sedan Presbyterian congregations. He was also a Sedan school board member and clerk of Bangor Township board for 15 years.

Survivors include three daughters, Carole (Stanley) Evans of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., Judy (Harlan) Mostrom of Thief River Falls, and Cyndia (Robert) Schneck of Hillsboro, N.D.; two sons, Marlin (Ching) Van Der Veen of Saipan and Daniel (Shari) Van Der Veen of Faribault; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Florence (John) Banga.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Donna; his parents; four brothers, William, Walter, Benjamin, and Arthur Van Der Veen; and two sisters, Mary Driesenga and Effie Sitter. A00003B2002JU05
