John Ulrich, 89

Red Lake Falls - John H. Ulrich, 89, died on Tuesday, September 9, 2003 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 14 at St. John Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls with the Rev. Jeffrey Lytle officiating. Casketbearers were Larry Ulrich, Louis Ulrich, Marv Kading, Ray Ulrich, Frank Ehling and Merlin Carlson. Honorary casketbearer were all of John's grandchildren. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Red Lake Falls.

John Henry Ulrich was born on September 5, 1914 in River Township of Red Lake County, the son of Fred and Dora (Seeger) Ulrich. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, where he was a long time member. He graduated from elementary school in rural Red Lake Falls and worked on the famiy farm and the surrounding area until moving to California in the mid 1930s. While in California, John continued his education at the Mare Island Navy Yard, graduating as a journeman machinist.

On April 5, 1941, he married Eleanore Steltz in Richmond, Calif. In 1946, they moved back to his family farm in Minnesota, where they farmed small grains and raised dairy cattle. John enjoyed farming and working as a machinist at American Crystal, both in Crookston and Drayton, N.D. He also enjoyed music, singing in the church choir, playing his tenor banjo and traveling throughout the United States and Canada. He was a member of the Men's Club and choir and was a township treasurer for many years. He was a resident of Valley Home in Thief River Falls since January 1999 and at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine since April 2002.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth (Linda K.) and David (Linda G.), both of Red Lake Falls; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Holly Baxter of Long Beach, Calif.; a brother, Art of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

John is preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor; his parents; three sisters, Marie, Dorothy and Minnie; and five brothers, Carl, Fritz, Ernest, William and Alvin.
