John Swenson, 55

Peoria, Ariz. - John Melvin Swenson, 55, formerly of Thief River Falls, died on Tuesday, October 29, 2002 in Peoria, Ariz.

Funeral services were held on Swenson, John Saturday, November 2 at Peace Lutheran Church in Peoria, Ariz. Interment was in National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix, Ariz. with military honors and color guard. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 9 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Terry Olson officiating.

John Melvin Swenson was born on January 25, 1947, the son of Melvin and Merilla Swenson in Auburn, Calif. The family moved to Thief River Falls, where he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1965. He earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Moorhead State University and a master of arts degree in public administration from Northern Michigan University. On September 7, 1968, John married Charlotte Allen in Fargo, N.D. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years as a fighter pilot. He received many honors and was stationed in many states and overseas in Germany and Saudi Arabia. Following his retirement from the Air Force, John spent ten years as a financial representative.

John's hobbies included golfing, scuba diving, tinkering on cars, carpentry and woodworking projects. He enjoyed camping and traveling with his family and friends and his favorite pastime was spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte; daughter, Lea (Chris) Byram; son, Brian (Cheryl); his mother, Merilla; sisters, Solveig and Anita (Mike) Cronk; two grandchildren; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

John was preceded in death by two brothers, Timothy and Mark, and his father, Melvin.
