Carl Sweno, 92

Trail - Carl Sweno, 92, died on Sunday, February 23, 2003 at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine.

Funeral services will be held at Sweno, Carl 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26 (today) at Bethany Lutheran Church in rural Trail with the Rev. Bob Kelly officiating. Cindy Bjerklie will be the organist. Casketbearers will be Thomas Sweno, Lloyd Sweno, Harold Sweno, Michael Sweno, Jeremy Bergerson and Alan Bergerson. Honorary casketbearers will be all of Carl's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Interment will be in Bethany Lutheran Cemetery in rural Trail. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at the church.

Carl Melvin Sweno was born on December 2, 1910, the son of Martin and Karen (Berg) Sweno in Johnson Township of Polk County. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. After finishing school, Carl and his brother, Henry, took over the farm after his father died. He continued to farm all his life. He also worked for Northern Sand and Gravel in Trail for about five years. He then worked for 18 campaigns with American Crystal Sugar in Crookston, until retiring there when he was 67 years old.

On November 9, 1946, he married Naomi C. Peterson in Fisher. The couple made their home on Carl's family farm. He enjoyed deer hunting and duck hunting. He also liked mechanic work and overhauling cars and tractors. He also collected copper and scrap metal and iron, and sold it. He enjoyed gardening and was a life long member of the Bethany Church. He worked as the Johnson Township assessor for over 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, Naomi of Trail; four sons, Clary (Judith) of Embarrass, David (Mary) of Oklee, Richard (Gwendolyn) of Lebanon, Mo. and Daryl (Lori) of Erskine; 20 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Diane; an infant son, Ronald; his brother, Henry; and two sisters, Mabel Bergerson and Inga Johnson.
