Robert Swanson, 70

Detroit Lakes - Robert D. Swanson, 70, died Monday, June 11, 2001 at Fairview-Southdale Hospital in Edina.

Funeral services were held at 11 Swanson Obit a.m. on Monday, June 18, at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes with Rev. Dave Sohl, Rev. Jerry Dent and Rev. R.W. Hauser officiating. Interment was in the St. Hilaire Community Cemetery in St. Hilaire with David-Donehower Funeral Home of Detroit Lakes in charge of the arrangements.

Robert D. Swanson was born on July 2, 1930 in Red Lake county, the son of Carl and Ruth (Anderson) Swanson. He attended school in Plummer, graduating from Plummer High School in 1948.He attended the University of Minnesota Agricultural College, graduating in 1950.

On June 12, 1954, Robert was united in marriage to Arloine Anderson in Newfolden. The couple farmed at rural Plummer until 1979. In 1980, they moved to Loveland, Colo. where Robert did staff recruiting for the Youth Investment Foundation and started a painting and wallpapering business. In 1989, the couple moved to Little Floyd Lake at Detroit Lakes. They continued their painting business until 1996 when Robert started building utility sheds for Stenerson Lumber Company where he continued to be employed until the time of his death.

Robert was a member of Community Alliance Church, serving as an elder for many years and a Bible study leader. He was a member of the Hi-Mileage group for seniors, was a care group leader for single moms and a member of the local chapter of Gideons International. He was also active in the jail ministry and Bible distribution.

During his years of teaching Sunday school and Bible studies, he enjoyed mentoring young people. He also enjoyed missions, serving on the board and doing volunteer work for Steer, Inc., Covenant Bible College and Repairers of Broken Walls.

Bob is survived by his wife, Arloine of Detroit Lakes; three sons, Gregg (Cindy) of Princeton, Jon (Cleo) of Fargo, N.D. and Brad (Carla) of Elk River; three daughters, Colleen (Jay) Conta of Richmond, Va., Deb (Greg) Olson of Elk River and Ann Swanson of Minneapolis; three sisters, Doris (Kenneth) Swanson of Thief River Falls, Eunice (Paul) Thorstenson of Sioux City, Iowa and Mary Ann (Paul) Johnson of Rochester; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister. A00003B2001JN20
