N.D. - Thordis Svendsgaard, 97, formerly of
Thief River Falls, died on Monday, August 18, 2003
at Rosewood on Broadway nursing home in Fargo,
N.D.
Memorial
services were held on Friday, August 22 at Wright
Funeral Home in Moorhead. Interment was on
Saturday, August 23 in Greenwood Cemetery in Thief
River Falls.
Thordis
Svendsgaard was born in rural Thief River Falls on
December 15, 1905, the daughter of Kjartan and
Karen (Rustad) Svendsgaard. She was baptized and
confirmed in the Mavie Lutheran Church. She grew up
and attended school in Thief River Falls,
graduating with honors from Lincoln High School in
1924. She attended business classes at Concordia
College. In 1929, she started the Svendsgaard
Printing Shop and Employment Agency.
At
the age of 38, she enlisted in the U.S. Army,
serving as a WAC, for a short time during World War
II. She was honorably discharged in 1944. For 68
years, Thordis delivered notices of meetings for
the Cass County Bar Association. Her passion was to
help those in need, including her many friends in
nursing homes. She was actively involved with
various Humane Societies.
Survivors
include two nephews and four nieces.
Thordis
was preceded in death by her parents; brothers,
Julius, Lewis, Alexander, Charles and Edward;
sisters, Dagny Lendobeja, Adelaide Ingberg and Olga
Berrell; and three nephews.
