Robert Sundberg, 91

Grygla - Robert Sundberg, 91, died on Sunday, May 4, 2003 at his home in rural Grygla.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 8 at the Johnson-Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls with the Rev. Robert Dahlen officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services on Thursday.

Robert Debs Sundberg was born on February 9, 1912, the son of Eric Lars and Angeline (Anderson) Sundberg, in Spruce Grove Township of Beltrami County. He grew up and attended Spruce Grove School and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis.

On July 17, 1943, he married Maxine Porter in Grygla. He was employed as manager of Fourtown Creamery and was a bus driver for the Grygla School for 22 years. He also was a beef and dairy farmer. Robert and Maxine were married for 59 years. He served on numerous boards including, Grygla Co-op Creamery, Grygla Farmers Union Oil Co., Roseau Electric Co-op, Beltrami County Nursing Board and the Spruce Grove Township Board. Robert was an avid Minnesota sports team fan, especially for the Twins. He enjoyed outdoor gardening, bird watching, deer hunting and playing horseshoes. He was active in the Minnesota Democratic Farmer-Labor Party. Time with his family was very special to him. He played the accordion and shared stories of early family history.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine of Grygla; children, Roberta (Jim) Lian Schaefer of Reynolds, N.D., Glenn (Bette) of Grand Forks, N.D., and Lee (Kandyce) of Grygla; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Karl (Mabel) of Grygla; a sister-in-law, Esther Sundberg of Grygla; and a brother-in-law, Archie (Carolyn) Porter of Wanatchee, Wash.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roland and Clayton; and sisters, Evelyn Wogensen, Lonia Wold, Lydia Phillips and Florence Sundberg.
