Stigen, 88
Thief
River Falls - Ernest Stigen, 88, died Thursday,
November 22, 2001 at Pioneer Memorial Care Center
in Erskine.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 27, at
2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Gary
Johnson officiating. Phyllis Dalager was the
organist, and the soloist was Vanessa Anderson.
Casketbearers were Gerry Kiesow, Jeff Lannoye Jr.,
Jeff Lannoye Sr., Shane Kiesow, Gary Hasby and Tony
Hoffard. Honorary casketbearers were staff members
of Pioneer Special Care Unit. Interment was in
Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls with Green
Funeral Home in charge of the
arrangements.
Ernest Roy Stigen was born on September 17, 1913 in
Shelly, the son of Theodore and Emily (Housker)
Stigen. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion
Lutheran Church. When he was a year old, Ernest
moved with his family to Stiner where he attended a
rural school and completed the seventh grade. He
worked on the family farm and during the winter
months, worked in the logging camps.
In 1942, he was inducted into military service at
Fort Snelling and served as a machine gunner in
Central Europe. Ernest was awarded the European
African-Middle East Service Medal, a Good Conduct
Medal and five overseas bars. Following his
honorable discharge on October 26, 1945, he
returned to Thief River
Falls.
Ernest worked on a beet farm in Warren for 15 years
and at Land O'Lakes for 25 years. He married Cora
Lannoye and together, they raised 10 children.
Ernest moved to Pioneer Memorial Care Center in
March of 1998. Cora died on December 13,
1999.
Among his interests was working on his son-in-law's
farm during the summer
months.
Ernest is survived by three daughters, Gwen Stigen
of St. Hilaire, Cherie (Kurt) Leader of Moorhead
and Laurie Stigen of Thief River Falls; three sons,
Greg and Lonnie Stigen, both of Thief River Falls,
and Gordy Hasby of Crookston; a stepdaughter, Kathy
Kiesow of Brandon, S.D.; a stepson, Jeff (LaVon)
Lannoye of Thief River Falls; 15 grandchildren; and
nine great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his wife, Cora; a son, Cliff;
a daughter, Sue Axtell; a grandson, Christopher
Michael Fayette; a stepson, Nick Lannoye; his
parents; three sisters, Ella, Cora and Alice; and
four brothers, Millard, George, Raymond and Carl.
