Martha Stenseth, 93

Thief River Falls - Martha Stenseth, 93, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at Stenseth obit 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Tim Bauer officiating. Ida Nordvall was the organist, and the soloist was Vanessa Anderson. Casketbearers were Daniel Johnson, Arnold Peterson, Fred Dallmann, Edward Duke, Roger Mickelson and Maurice Stenseth. Honorary casketbearers were all of Martha's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls with Green Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Martha Olson was born on January 26, 1908 in McHenry county near Langdon, N.D., the daughter of Sigurd and Mae (Wright) Olson. She was baptized in Spalding, Sask., Canada and confirmed as an adult at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. She attended school in North Dakota and Minnesota and was later employed as a domestic and restaurant worker.

On November 2, 1927, she was united in marriage to Joseph Johnson at Trinity Lutheran Church. Joseph and Martha farmed in Kratka township and were members of Bethany Lutheran Church. Joe died on May 24, 1957. Later, Martha worked at the Piggly Wiggly and Red Owl stores in Thief River Falls.

On June 8, 1959, Martha was united in marriage to John Stenseth. The couple farmed in Silverton township. They enjoyed fishing and winter travels, often going to Mesa, Ariz. John died on August 1, 1992.

Martha was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Silverton Home Study Group and a life member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries.

She enjoyed people and her many visits on the telephone with family and friends.

Survivors include three sons, Ronald (Irene) Johnson of Bellflower, Calif., Clifford (Lois) Johnson of Visalia, Calif. and Donavan Johnson of Thief River Falls; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty (Howard) Bowers of New York Mills; and two sisters-in-law.

Martha was preceded in death by her husbands; parents; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy; five brothers, Audley, Harold, Sigurd Jr., Douglas and Floyd Olson; and three sisters, Gwendolyn Schmikle, Leone Padden and Verna Jensen. A00003B2001JN13
