Roy Steitz, 87

Buxton, N.D. - Roy Steitz, 87, died Tuesday, November 6, 2001 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, N.D.

Funeral services were held at 11 Steitz obit a.m. on Friday, November 9, at St. John Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, N.D. Interment was held at 3 p.m. Friday in Oak Grove Cemetery near Red Lake Falls. Wildeman Funeral Home of Hillsboro was in charge of the arrangements.

Roy Samuel Steitz was born on April 2, 1914 in Fresno, Calif., the son of Michael and Elizabeth (Rudolph) Steitz. He grew up in the Fresno area and attended school in Kerman, Calif. Roy was baptized and confirmed in the Missouri Synod Lutheran faith.

He served as a musician with the United States Marine Corps, playing the tuba and string bass.

On February 11, 1939, Roy was united in marriage to Ruth Eleanor Englund in Vinland, Calif. The couple made their home in Richmond, Calif. until 1949 when they moved to Red Lake Falls and owned and operated a farm for more than 44 years. Roy also worked as the head of maintenance at the Land O'Lakes Feed and Grain Elevator for 21 years. In 1993, Roy and Eleanor moved to Buxton, N.D. where they had since resided.

Roy was an active church member throughout his lifetime, serving St. John Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls as a Sunday school teacher, Bible school teacher, choir member and chairman of the congregation. He was also a member of the St. Hilaire school board and River Township board.

As a hobby, he enjoy repairing clocks for his neighbors and friends and building clocks for family members.

Roy is survived by his wife, Ruth Eleanor of Buxton, N.D.; three daughters, Judy (Merlin) Carlson and Margaret (Frank) Ehling, both of Red Lake Falls, and Cathy (John) Hilley of Buxton, N.D.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lawrence (Clara) Steitz of Fresno, Calif.; a brother-in-law; a sister-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert; a granddaughter, Anita Carlson; his parents; two sisters, Meta Busch and Eleanore Ulrich; and a brother, Theodore Steitz. A00003B2001NV14
