Eleanor Steitz, 84

Buxton, N.D. - Eleanor Steitz, 84, died Saturday, March 9, 2002 at Hillsboro Hospital Medical Center in Hillsboro, N.D.

A funeral service will be held Friday, March 15, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery near Red Lake Falls.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. memorial service at Wildeman Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church Friday.

Ruth Eleanor Englund was born on July 13, 1917 in Kerman, Calif., the daughter of Daniel Isadore and Borghild Othelia (Wickstrom) Englund. Eleanor grew up and attended school in Kerman. She was baptized on April 6, 1919 and confirmed on May 15, 1932 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kerman.

On February 11, 1939, Eleanor was united in marriage to Ray Steitz in Vinland, Calif. For 10 years, they made their home in Richmond, Calif. In 1949, Eleanor and Ray moved to Red Lake Falls where they owned and operated a farm for more than 44 years. In 1993, the couple moved to Buxton, N.D. Ray died on November 6, 2001.

Eleanor was an active member of her church throughout her lifetime. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Richmond, Calif. and at St. John Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls, she served as a Sunday school teacher, Bible school teacher, and was a member of the choir. She was also active in ladies aide and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.

While raising her family, Eleanor enjoyed gardening, nature, music, sewing, and living on the farm. Special enjoyment later in life included spending time with family and friends and keeping in touch through letter writing with those around the country.

Survivors include three daughters, Judy (Merlin) Carlson and Margaret (Frank) Ehling, both of Red Lake Falls, and Cathy (John) Hilley of Buxton, N.D.; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law; a sister-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Robert; a granddaughter, Anita Carlson; two sisters, Esther Justice and Myrtle Brown; and five brothers, Ted, Walter, Eldon, Elmer, and Carl. A00003B2002MR13
