Catherine Sommerfeld, 81

Grand Forks, N.D. - Catherine M. Sommerfeld, 81, formerly of Michigan, N.D., died Sunday, February 25, 2001 at Valley Eldercare in Grand Forks, N.D.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 2, at Zion Lutheran Church in Michigan, N.D. with Rev. Arthur L. Helbig and Rev. David Laue officiating. Emily Wolfgram was the organist. Interment was in Michigan Cemetery with Aaker Funeral Home of Lakota, N.D. in charge of the arrangements.

Catherine Mae Talbot was born on May 17, 1919 in Hamlin township of Nelson county in North Dakota, the daughter of Edward and Carrie (Grogh) Talbot. She grew up in Hamlin township and attended schools in the McVille area.

On October 27, 1937, Catherine married August F. Sommerfeld at Niagara, N.D. The couple farmed together in the Michigan, N.D. area for several years before 1952 when they purchased a farm in Center township of Nelson county near Stump Lake and farmed there for many years. Beginning in 1957 and for the next 25 years, Catherine worked as a waitress and cook at Kite Cafe in Michigan. In the late 1950's, she and August moved into Michigan and resided there until 1996 when they moved to Grand Forks. After August died on October 8, 1998, Catherine continued to live in Grand Forks. She became a resident of Valley Eldercare on November 14, 2000.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Michigan and its Ladies Aid and Michigan Senior Citizens. She was also treasurer for Aid Association for Lutherans for over 25 years.

Survivors include a son, Gary (Gay) Sommerfeld of Grand Forks, N.D.; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Phyllis Tangen of The Dalles, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers, Sterling Talbot and Maurice "Bud" Talbot. A00003B2000MA07
