Dr. Allen Solem, 89

Gainesville, Fla. - Dr. Allen R. Solem, 89, formerly of Thief River Falls, died on Monday, September 23, 2002.

A memorial service will be held on a later date at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.

Allen R. Solem was born on July 5, 1913, the son of Norwegian immigrants, Peder and Alvide (Krogstad) Solem of Thief River Falls. He attended Countyline elementary school and graduated from Northwest School of Agriculture in St. Paul. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1938, his MBA from Wayne University in Detroit, Mich. and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Allen was associate professor of psychology at North Carolina State University, the University of Maryland and the University of Michigan from 1953 to 1960. He was a professor of management psychology at the University of Rochester in New York and at the University of Minnesota from 1960 to 1981. In 1981 and 1982, he consulted in private practice and the following year, was the lecturer in Japan through the Asian division of the University of Maryland's Overseas Program. From 1983-93, he was a business consultant in Gainesvill, Fla.

Allen served in World War II with the United States Army, drafted September 3, 1942 with honorable discharge on March 7, 1946 as personnel technician 5 in HQ Det. European Theater of Operations. Active duties included battle of Rhineland. He received the American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal WWII.

Allen had a great sense of humor and loved to tell stories and read. He enjoyed life and people. He was devoted to teaching and helping others obtain their higher education goals. Allen was a skilled woodworker and had built several pieces of furniture. He authored and co-authored several books and articles on psychology in industry, problem solving, role-playing, work motivation and other related areas. Allens wishes were to be cremated and have his ashes scattered near his parents.

Survivors include 13 nieces and nephews and his special friend, Dr. Joanne Bowman.

Allen was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice (Dr. C.M.) Adkins and Ruth (Jack) Lee; three brothers, Otto, Arne and Alfred; and a nephew. A00003B2002OT02
