Smuda, 67
Columbus,
Ohio - Janice Dorothy Smuda, 67, formerly of
Thief River Falls, died on Tuesday, September 17,
2002 at Kobacker House in Columbus,
Ohio.
Memorial
services were held on Saturday, October 5 at Bethel
Lutheran Church in Middleburg Heights, Ohio with
Rev. Steve Krebill officiating. At Janice's
request, please send contributions to an art museum
of your choice, the Tuba City Public Library, PO
Box 190, Tuba City, Ariz. 86045 or plant a tree in
her memory.
Janice
graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River
Falls, Concordia College in Seward, Neb. and earned
a master's of library science degree from Kent
State University. She taught elementary school in
Minnesota for a time. Janice was a board member for
the Virginia Hamilton Society and a member of the
American Library Association. She was an early
childhood specialist for the Cuyahoga County Public
Library and she was the founder and director of the
LEAP (Library's Educational Alternative to
Preschoolers) Program.
Survivors
include her daughters, Pamela (Gary) Slater of
Gahanna, Ohio and Rachael Smuda of Florida; three
grandchildren; four sisters, Paulette Francis of
San Jose, Calif., Loraine Steiger of Thief River
Falls, Elayne (Robert) Ottinger of San Antonio,
Texas and Bernice Mason of Moline, Ill.; and two
brothers, Vern Horter and Clifford (Ramona) Horter,
both of Grafton, N.D..
Janice
was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and
Jeanne Louise Emily Horter and sisters, Lucy Knoll
and Delores Mason.
