- Raymond "Pine" Smolak, 86, of Hallock, died
at the Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center in
Hallock on Friday, November 14, 2003.
Memorial
services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at Sion
Lutheran Church in Lancaster, with Reverend Timothy
Lundeen officiating. Interment will be in Fort
Snelling National Cemetery.
Ray
was born in Plenywood, Mont. on September 10, 1917,
the son of George and Mary (Larter) Smolak. He
moved with his family to Lancaster as a child and
graduated from high school there. Ray served with
the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during WWII
and received the Purple Heart Medal.
On
January 31, 1948 he married Jeannette Mathison.
Raymond was a butter maker at the Lakeville
Creamery in Lakeville for 10 years and was a former
"Buttermaker of the Year in Minnesota." He later
worked for Koch Refinery in Farmington and retired
after 23 years with them. Jeanette died on February
12, 1978. Raymond moved to Lancaster in 1981. On
August 4, 1984 he married Celia Roman and settled
in Hallock. He was a member of the Lancaster
American Legion and the Lancaster Lions
Club.
Survivors
include his wife, Celia; one son, Adam Newman of
Decorah, Iowa; one grandson; one granddaughter;
stepchildren Charlotte (Lynn) Rynning of Kennedy,
Tim (Kathy) Roman of Hallock, and Lynette (Earl)
Berg of Middle River; and five
step-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; a son,
Jeffrey; two sisters, Eunice and Edith; and a
