Celia
Smolak, 79
Hallock
- Celia Roman Smolak, entrepreneur and avid
gardener, 79, died on Tuesday, June 29, 2004.
Funeral
services were held Saturday, July 3 at Grace
Lutheran Church in Hallock, with Rev. Kenneth Losch
presiding. Honorary casket bearers included Celia's
grandchildren.
Celia
was born on May 9, 1925, the daughter of John and
Emmy Jorgensen. She was raised on a farm southeast
of Thief River Falls.
On
June 25, 1943, Celia married John Roman of Plummer
and they farmed in the area for a number of years.
They moved on to Hallock where they settled to
raise their family. John opened a radiator repair
shop and soon after the young entrepreneurs opened
a store, "New and Next to New." Celia became the
proprietor of the busy store and she soon expanded
it, adding a motel in 1961 that flourished for many
years.
Although
owning the Gateway Motel took up much of Celia's
time, she also enjoyed gardening in her extensive
flower beds. Photography, quilting, canning and
spending time with her family were also important
aspects of Celias life. Years after the death
of John Roman, Celia married Raymond Smolak on
August 4, 1984.
They
lived happily in Hallock.
She
is survived by her children, Charlette (Lynn)
Rynning of Kennedy, Timothy Roman of Hallock,
Lynette (Earl) Berg of Middle River and Clara
(Floyd) Franklin of Dalhart, Texas; nine
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers
and sisters, Freddie Jorgensen of Thief River
