Joanne Smith, 50

San Quentin Village, Calif. - Joanne (Ostgarden) Smith, 50, of San Quentin Village, Calif., formerly of Fosston, died on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at her home.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 22 at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. John Dalen officiating. Casketbearers were Larry Lenes, Glenn Holweger, Aaron Lenes, Bob Evje, Ryan Holweger and Justin Holweger. Honorary casketbearers were all of Joanne's family and friends. Interment was in Kingo Lutheran Cemetery.

Joanne Lynn Ostgarden was born on June 8, 1952 in Fosston, the daughter of Clarence and Lois (Juvrud) Ostgarden. She was baptized and confirmed at Kingo Lutheran Church. Following her graduation from Fosston High School in 1970, she began working in Grand Forks, N.D. In 1971 she married Mark Smith and the couple moved to Long Beach, Calif. She worked at a variety of jobs in the San Fransisco area until 1984, when she found employment with the California Department of corrections in San Quentin, Calif. Over the last 18 years she served in a number of different office positions, the last of which was Staff Services Analyst.

Survivors include her son, Christopher of California; her parents of Fosston; one brother, Jeff Ostgarden of Fosston; two sisters, Gail (Glenn) Holweger of Grand Forks, N.D., and Carol (Larry) Lenes of Fosston; one niece; three nephews; and a number of aunts and cousins.

Joanne was preceded in death by her grandparents.
