Grygla
- Hazel M. Smith, 90, died on Tuesday, January
7, 2003 at the CNC Unit of Northwest Medical Center
in Thief River Falls.
Funeral
services were held on
Friday,
January 10 at Grace Lutheran Church in Grygla with
Rev. Paul Knutson officiating. Joy Nordby was the
organist and Jodi Schulz was the soloist.
Casketbearers were Hazel's grandsons. Honorary
casketbearers were Hazel's granddaughters and great
great-grandchildren. Interement was in St. Olaf
cemetery in Valley Township of Marshall
County.
Hazel M.
Pappa was born on July 17, 1912, the daughter of
William Albert and Bessie O. (Haagensgaard) Pappa
in Ross Township of Montrail County, N.D. She was
baptized and confirmed in Ross, N.D. and attended
high school in Ross. Following high school, she
attended Teacher's Training in Minot,
N.D.
On
September 19, 1931, Hazel was united in marriage to
Thomas Reed Smith in Stanley, N.D. The couple lived
northeast of Fourtown until 1937, when they moved
to Benville Township, near Grygla. Hazel moved to
Valley Home in 1991 and then to the CNC Unit in
1994.
She
enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren, gardening, flowers, knitting
mittens for her grandchildren, playing cards and
playing bingo. She was a charter member of the VFW
Ladies Auxiliary #3858 since 1946.
Survivors
include her children, Bernice (Selmer) Askeland of
Simms, Mont., Ida (Arnold) Stanley of Grygla,
William (Irene) of Grygla, Helen (Cletus) Rein of
St. Paul, Eleanor (Kenneth) Carlson of St. Paul,
Roger of Grygla, Kaye (Dale "Shorty") Wilkens of
Grygla and Donna Smith of Warroad; 24
grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, great
great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren; a
brother, Melvin Pappa of Stanley, N.D.; and several
nieces and nephews.
Hazel was
preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a
daughter, Marlene "Pat" Schramske; a son, Ronald;
an infant son; a grandson; two granddaughters; a
brother, Vernon Pappa; and a sister, Ida Laukala.
