Edith
E. Smeby, 86
Montrose,
Mich. - Edith E. Smeby, 86, died on Sunday,
July 4, 2004, at the Montrose, Mich. nursing home.
Funeral
services were held at
Collins
Funeral Chapel in Karlstad, with Pastor Kenneth
Lundell officiating. Casket bearers included Don
Peterson, Brad Peterson, Randy Barth, Ron
Birmingham, David Magnuson and Jeff Folland.
Edith
Elnor Peterson, the daughter of Hjalmer and Anna
(Johnson) Peterson, was born on September 12, 1917,
in Jupiter Township of Kittson County, near Lake
Bronson. She grew to womanhood there, and attended
the former Grant School near her home. Edith did
housekeeping at various farms in the area,
including Keine Farms near Kennedy.
On
December 22, 1940, she was united in marriage to
Leonard Smeby in Karlstad. The couple resided in
the Karlstad area until 1949, then moved to Flint,
Mich., where Edith was employed by General Motors
AC, retiring after 33 years. She was a member of
the North Baptist Church, serving in many
capacities over the years. In January of 1974, the
couple moved to Flushing, Mich.
Leonard
died on July 29, 1974. Edith continued to make her
home in Flushing. For the past four years, she
resided at the Montrose, Mich., nursing home.
Edith
is survived by one brother, Maynard (Lois) of
Flushing; brother-in-law, Tom (Agnes) Smeby of Mt.
Morris, Mich.; three sisters-in-law, Lillie Smeby
of Flushing, Wanda Peterson of Frankmuth, Mich.,
and Emma Hams of Spokane, Wash.; in addition to
several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Edith
was preceded in death by her husband; her parents;
four brothers, Manfred, Hilmer, Norman and Arnold;
and two sisters, Evelyn Lysford and Rose Frei.
