William "Bill" Simpson Sr., 83

Plummer - William "Bill" Simpson, Sr., 83, died on Saturday, July 20, 2002, at his rural Plummer home.

Visitation was on Tuesday, July 23 William Simpson Photo-bw from 6 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the Johnson Funeral Home in Red Lake Falls. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 24 at 11 a.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Mark Luckiesh officiating. Darcy Nordvick will be the organist and Scott Simpson will sing "The Lord's Prayer". Casketbearers will be Patrick Simpson, William Simpson III, Scott Simpson, Daniel Hesse, Kevin Malwitz and Ferd DeHate. Honory casketbearers shall be all of Bill's family and friends. Interment will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Red Lake Falls with military honors provided by the American Legion Post of Plummer.

William Martin Simpson was born on April 22, 1919, the son of the late Walter and Inez (Anderson) Simpson, in Afton, Iowa. He grew up and attended school in Creston, Iowa. On March 12, 1941, he entered the United States Army, serving as Tank Destroyer Commander in the Phillippines, New Guinea, Eastern Mandates, Bismarck Archipelago, and Luzon. He received the Bronze Medal with Bronze V Device, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Ribbon, and the Phillippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. Bill was honorably discharged on August 16, 1945.

On June 16, 1946, he married Helen H. Hesse in St. Paul, where they lived while Bill worked for the railroad and for Union Brass. In 1950, the family moved to the farm south of Plummer, where they resided until 1987, when they moved into their present home. Bill farmed in the Plummer area, and he also worked for American Crystal Sugar in Crookston.

Bill liked hunting and fishing and enjoyed shooting the bull with his family and friends, but most of all, he enjoyed the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a life member of the VFW and a member of the Plummer American Legion, the NRA and the NFO.

Survivors include his wife, Helen of Plummer; two sons, William Martin Simpson II of Detroit Lakes, and Charles Sylvester (Jolayne) Simpson of Plummer; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his brother, Charles Edward Simpson of Port Angeles, Wash.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary (Simpson) Stout.
