Rapids - Erma Francis Shumway, 85, of Park
Rapids, died on Thursday, January 29, 2004 at the
Hanson Care Home in Park Rapids.
Funeral
services were held on Sunday, Feb. 1, at the Cease
Family Funeral Home Chapel in Park Rapids, with
Rev. Dennis Wieland officiating. A private family
inurnment will be held at a later date.
Erma
Frances Otto was born on November 3, 1918 in St.
Cloud, the daughter of John and Gertrude (Roden)
Otto. She grew up and attended school in St. Cloud
where she graduated from high school in 1936. She
attended Minneapolis Business College for 1 year.
She was
united in marriage to Ed Klein in June 1939 in St.
Cloud. They lived in St. Cloud for many years. She
was united in marriage to Clyde H. Shumway on July
3, 1964 in Thief River Falls. They lived in Thief
River Falls for over 20 years. She assisted her
husband with their business, Shumway Oil Co. doing
the bookkeeping. After their retirement they lived
on Lake Belle Taine for many years before moving to
Park Rapids, where they have resided since.
She was
an avid bowler and she was active in two bowling
leagues. She enjoyed bird watching, caring for her
pets, family gatherings and living in the lake
country. She liked cooking, playing cards and
interior decorating. She was also an avid baseball
fan. The Twins and Cubs were her favorite teams to
follow. She loved All-Star Wrestling and she took
her kids to matches when they were
young.
Survivors
include her husband; three daughters, Janice (Art)
Baird of Clovis, N.M., Renee (Arnold) Ness of
Middle River, and Elaine (Ben) Hible of Clovis,
N.M.; two sons, Dennis (Laurie) Klein of Thornton,
Colo. and Jeff (Katie) Shumway of Menahga;
step-daughters, Debra (Larry) Mike of Inver Grove
Heights, Sue (Mike) Lindemoen of Newfolden; one
step-son Clifton Shumway of Englewood, Colo.;
numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two
sisters, Irene (Julian) Klein of Shoreview, Vivian
(Ken) Winter of Halester, Calif.; and a brother
in-law, Bill Thull of Rock Springs.
Erma was
preceded in death by her parents; her first husband
Ed Klein; one brother Vincent Otto; three sisters,
Rosetta Quick, Adeline DeWenter and Vernie Thull;
and one grandson.
