Gertrude Schmitz, 92

Red Lake Falls - Gertrude Schmitz, 92, died on Sunday, October 20, 2002 at her home in Red Lake Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 2 schmitz p.m. on Wednesday, October 23 (today) at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls with Rev. Tim Bushy officiating. Polly Beyer will be the organist and special music will be provided by the St. Joseph Choir. Casketbearers will be Gertie's grandchildren. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Red Lake Falls.

Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Gertrude Marcella Knott was born on May 1, 1910, the daughter of Leo and Margaret (Gorres) Knott in Gervais Township of Red Lake County. She was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls. Her formal education was in grades one through eight at the country school across the Red Lake River. As a young woman, she worked for several area families. On September 26, 1934, she was united in marriage to Edward J. Schmitz at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The couple made their home in Red Lake Falls and farmed until 1970, when they moved to their present home in Red Lake Falls.

Gertie enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening, cooking, canning, dancing and making pies. She was one of the original members of the Canasta Group. She enjoyed playing the drums and, on occasion, played with the Schmitz Family Band. Gertie enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church where she was active in the guild and was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters.

Survivors include her husband, Edward of Red Lake Falls; five children, Vivian Talley of Parkers Prairie, Edward H. (Gaylene) Schmitz of Red Lake Falls, James (Theresa) Schmitz of Red Lake Falls, Leo Schmitz of Red Lake Falls and Janice (Vern) Ebersviller of Waconia; 16 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank Knott Sr. of Red Lake Falls; two sisters, Gacella Zins of Dickinson, N.D. and Frances Schiefert of Thief River Falls; one sister-in-law, Pauline Knott of Red Lake Falls; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Gertrude was preceded in death by one son, Ronald and brothers and sisters, John, Gust, Harvey, Dora, Elizabeth, Matt and Henry Sr.
