- Phillip Schmit, 93, died Friday, March 29,
2002 at his home in Trail.
Mass
of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. today
(Wednesday, April 3) at St. Mary's Catholic Church
in Fosston with Father Rick Boyd concelebrating.
Interment will be in St. Charles Catholic Cemetery
at Trail.
Visitation
was held Tuesday, April 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. with a
7 p.m. prayer service at St. Mary's Catholic
Church. Visitation will also be held for one hour
prior to today's service. Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral
Home of Fosston is in charge of the
arrangements.
Phillip
Leonard Schmit was born on December 13, 1908 on his
home farm in Eden Township near Trail, the son of
Dominque and Anna (Bries) Schmit. He was baptized
and confirmed at St. Charles Catholic Church, rural
Trail. As a young man, Phillip worked as a
herdsman, farm laborer, and woodsman in northern
Minnesota.
He
served in the U.S. Army during World War II from
September 12, 1942 to October 26, 1945. He received
his initial training at Camp Wolters, Texas where
he received medals for sharp shooting and as a
master with a bayonet. Phillip was a member of
Company C, 270th Engineer Combat Battalion and was
stationed in Northern Africa, Sicily, Italy,
France, and Germany. He received the Purple Heart
after he was wounded while attempting to retrieve
supplies on December 27, 1943.
After
the war, he worked as a carpenter and farmer. On
September 26, 1953, Phillip was united in marriage
to Mable Dorothy (Lund) Turner in Trail. The couple
worked a 160-acre dairy farm three miles south of
Trail.
Phillip
was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in
Trail, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fosston, and
Trail VFW Post 6426. He was also active in Eden
Township government.
Survivors
include four sons, Leslie (Shirley) Schmit of Thief
River Falls, Thomas (Chrissa) Schmit of Kissimmee,
Fla., John (Audrey) Schmit of Trail, and Peter
(Phyllis) Schmit of Shoreview; a daughter, Julie
Schmit of Orinda, Calif.; three stepchildren,
William Turner of Quincy, Wash., Mary MacBeth of
Mokelumne Hill, Calif., and Robert (Dorothy) Turner
of Kissimmee, Fla.; and many grandchildren, nieces,
nephews, and other relatives.
Phillip
was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two
brothers, Joe and Leonard; and four sisters, Eva
Olsen, Anna Agnes, Mary Busse, and Catherine
