Charles Schmidt, 83

Red Lake Falls - Charles Schmidt, 83, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Schmidt Obit

Mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, June 22, at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls with Father Tim Bushy and Father Gerald Noesen concelebrating. Kathie Knott was the organist, and special music was provided by St. Joseph's Church Choir. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Red Lake Falls with Johnson Funeral Service in charge of the arrangements.

Charles Mares Schmidt was born on November 7, 1917 at Plummer, the son of Charles Sr. and Annie (Mares) Schmidt. In 1926, Charles moved with his parents to Red Lake Falls were he attended school and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1936. He formed a dance band and played in the area.

On March 30, 1942, Charles entered the U.S. Army and served in the North Pacific during World War II. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater ribbon with one Bronze Star. Following his honorable discharge on October 3, 1945, he returned to Red Lake Falls.

Charles was united in marriage to Orrie Strande on December 8, 1947 in Thief River Falls. The couple lived in Fargo for three years before returning to Red Lake Falls where Charles worked at Thibert Chevrolet for several years. He started Smith Brothers Orchestra and performed throughout the area for many years. Orrie died on August 25, 1999.

Charles was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, the Red Lake Falls American Legion Post and the VFW.

He enjoyed gardening, entertaining his friends and especially music.

Charles is survived by a son, Mike Schmidt of Red Lake Falls; a daughter, Susan Schmidt of Minneapolis; two grandchildren; a sister, Betty Cassavant of Red Lake Falls; a brother, Francis "Bylo" (Clarice) Schmidt of Moorhead; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a sister, Clarissa; and a brother-in-law. A00003B2001JN27
