Jody Schmalz, 17

Lancaster - Jody Schmalz, 17, of rural Lancaster died on Friday, December 12, 2003 in rural Arnegard, N.D., as a result of a snowmobile accident.

Jody Faye Schmalz Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Greenbush, with Father Don Braukmann officiating. Casket bearers included Jason, Darin and Brian Bertilrud, Darby Dokken, Kevin Peterson, Jamie Sikorski, John Frislie and Klint Mahne. Interment was held on Thursday, Dec. 18 at St. John's Cemetery northeast of Caribou.

Jody Faye Schmalz, the daughter of Blaine "Butch" and Faye (Miller) Schmalz, was born May 18, 1986 in Greenbush. She was baptized on July 12, 1986 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Leo, and took her first communion on May 7, 1995, also at St. Aloysius and was confirmed on September 14, 2003 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Greenbush.

Jody attended school in Greenbush until the fifth grade and the Lancaster School from sixth to ninth grade. She then returned to the Greenbush-Middle River School where she was currently in her junior year.

Jody was active in choir, basketball, volleyball, FFA, 4-H, and Blessed Sacrament Youth Groups. She loved hunting and fishing, camping, swimming, snowmobiling, four-wheeling, and hunting for shedded deer antlers. She also enjoyed spending time with friends, photography and scrapbooking.

Survivors include her parents; two sisters, Amy and Kelsey Schmalz; one brother, Cody Schmalz, all of Lancaster; grandparents, Carol Miller of Greenbush, William and Evelyn Schmalz of Badger; several uncles, aunts, cousins and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Myron Miller; two cousins; and a friend, Casey Johnson of Arnegard, N.D., who also died in the accident.
