Hazel Schams, 91

New Lisbon, Wisc. - Hazel Schams, 91, died Sunday, August 12, 2001 at Pleasant Acres Nursing Home near New Lisbon, Wisc.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, at Crandell Funeral Home in Mauston, Wisc. Burial was in Mauston Cemetery.

Hazel Annie Dorothy Mineard was born on June 8, 1910 at home in Kendall, Wisc., the daughter of Elmer and Annie (Casper) Mineard. When she was a child, she raised sheep and had a trapping license to earn money for the family. Since she was very young, she worked actively on family farms, riding horse to keep the cattle in check, driving a tractor, combining, making soap, baking bread, maintaining a garden, searching area woods for nuts and going to the cranberry marsh for cranberries.

On April 20, 1932, she married William Charles Schams. The couple moved into their first home in 1935 and purchased a farm near Mauston, Wisc. in 1944 where they raised registered brown Swiss, other cattle and animals and grains. Hazel also managed and later leased the Mauston Hotel and worked at the Mauston Garment Factory. William Schams died in 1973.

During Hazel's lifetime she cultivated friendships worldwide and had over 250 pen pals. She enjoyed traveling and had traveled throughout the 48 contiguous states. During her last years, she remained active by visiting local attractions with her grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Joan Maytum, Wilma Brockmiller and Marian Paradis; a son, William Schams Jr.; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a niece.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a sister; two brothers; a son-in-law; two grandchildren; and a nephew.
