Virgil Schalz, 75

Brainerd - Virgil C. Schalz, 75, died Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls.

Services were held on Saturday, March 2, at 9:30 a.m. at Temple Baptist Church in Brainerd with Rev. Pat Evans and Rev. Harold Erickson officiating. Interment was in Lake Edward Cemetery in Lake Edward Township of Crow Wing County. Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home of Brainerd was in charge of the arrangements.

Virgil C. Schalz was born on August 13, 1926 in Pennington County, the son of Nichalous P. and Clara A. (Olsen) Schalz. He married Mary E. Orren on August 21, 1953 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Virgil worked as a commercial carpenter for many years.

He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and a charter member of both the Jenkins VFW and the Brainerd American Legion.

Virgil is survived by his wife; a son, Del Schalz of New Castle, Penn.; two daughters, Debbie (Bob) Bates of Warsaw, Ind. and Peggy Van Horn of Brainerd; six grandchildren; four step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Beverly Thune of Twin Valley and Virginia Tripp of St. Cloud.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and a sister.
