Irene Saustad, 86

Thief River Falls - Irene Saustad, 86, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at Oakland Park Nursing Home in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at Saustad obit 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 25, at the United Methodist Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Dan Horn officiating. Reid Froiland was the organist, and the soloist was Vanessa Anderson. Casketbearers were Roger DeLap, Gordon DeLap, Don Nicholson, Mark Duchamp, Scot Christenson, Ross Christenson and Jon Mauna. Burial was in Holt Cemetery in Holt with Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls in charge of the arrangements.

Irene Lillian Nicholson was born on September 26, 1914 in Gatzke, the daughter of Ira and Ruth (Loft) Nicholson. She was baptized at the United Methodist Church and attended school in Thief River Falls, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1932.

On November 11, 1934, Irene was united in marriage to Chris A. Saustad at Thief River Falls where the couple made their home. In 1942, they moved to Sonoma, Calif. were Chris worked at the Mare Island Navy yard. In 1945, they returned to Thief River Falls where Irene worked for Dr. Gilbert and also as the secretary at Northup School for 25 years. She retired in 1983. She also worked in the office at the Pennington County Fair for many years. Chris died on June 20, 1991.

Irene was a member of the United Methodist Church where she was active in its women's circles, taught Sunday school and counted the Sunday school and church offerings for many years.

Irene and Chris were square dance enthusiasts and enjoyed dancing and spending time together. She also enjoyed reading, sewing, crocheting, knitting, cooking and baking for family and friends and participating in Birthday Club with her friends.

Irene is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Alan) Christenson of Mountain Iron; a son, Bruce Saustad (special friend Edie Brandli) of Thief River Falls; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; A brother, Earl (Shirley) Nicholson of Tustin, Calif.; a sister, Illa Delap of Thief River Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chris; an infant son; her parents; and a brother, Lawrence. A00003B2000MY30
