Viking
- Maynard Ranum, 79, died Friday, October 26,
2001 at his home in Viking.
Funeral
services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday,
October
31)
at Evangelical Free Church in Thief River Falls
with Rev. Jeff Schirle and Rev. Mel Olberg
officiating. Arlene Hanson and Kathy Olson will be
the organists, and Diane Haven will be the soloist.
Special music will also be presented by Jane
Mattson, Virgil and Marvelle Hjelle and Dan Olson.
Casketbearers will be Terry Ranum, Philip Ranum,
Wayne Saewyc, Mark Ranum, Kevin Ranum and Keith
Glanzer. Interment will be in Rindahl Cemetery in
New Solum Township of Marshall County.
Visitation
was held Tuesday, October 30, from 4 to 8 p.m. with
a 7 p.m. prayer service at Green Funeral Home in
Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held for
one hour prior to services at the church
today.
Maynard
Curtiss Ranum was born on May 10, 1922 at Viking,
the son of Oscar and Clara Estelle (Olson) Ranum.
He was baptized at Rindahl Lutheran Church in
Rosewood on July 10, 1923. Maynard attended school
at Columbus Elementary School in New Solum from
1929 to 1937. He then spent several years working
for area farmers and logging.
On
February 13, 1954, he was united in marriage to
Betty Elaine Waagedahl at Viking Covenant Church in
Viking. Maynard worked road construction in North
Dakota and southern Minnesota before returning to
Viking where he operated a gas station. In 1964, he
moved to Farmington and operated his own service
station. Maynard owned and operated three stations
at New Market, retiring in 1991 and returning to
Viking where he did some service work and mowed
ditches for Marshall County and the City of
Viking.
Maynard
was a member of Trinity Evangelical Free Church in
Lakeville where he served as a deacon and worked
with the Boys Brigade. After returning to Viking,
he became a member of Viking Covenant Church and
held the office of deacon. He was also a member of
the Viking City Council.
Survivors
include his wife, Betty; a daughter, Loretta "Lori"
Faye Ranum of Japan; five sons, Terry Curtis
(Monika) of Killeen, Texas, Philip Craig of Buffalo
Lake, Wayne Charles (Elizabeth) Saewyc of Red Wing,
Mark Eldon of Minneapolis and Kevin Dale (Kim)
Ranum of Central Lake, Mich.; 13 grandchildren;
nine great-grandchildren; six sisters, Marceline
Grundhaus of Thief River Falls, Delores (Sheldon)
Forland of Shawnee, Kan., Margaret (Delano) Lind of
Minneapolis, Elsie Hodik of Thief River Falls,
Isabelle Krohn of Willmar and Alice Kezar of
Warroad; and five brothers, Oral (Barbara) of
Stanley, N.D., Oscar "Bud" (Delores) of Harris,
Lloyd and Sidney (Clarice), both of Viking, and
Stanley (Violet) of Neche, N.D.
Maynard
was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jamie
Ranum; his parents; an infant brother, Shanly,
three stepbrothers, Sanford, John and Glenn Ranum;
and a stepsister, Florence Ueland.
