Ordway
- Earl Myron Poppenhagen, 75, died on Sunday,
January 18, 2004 at Crowley County Nursing Center
in Ordway.
Funeral
services were held on Saturday, Jan. 24, at Ordway
Assembly of God Church, with Pastor Leonard Jones
and former Pastor Richard Zabriskie officiating.
Casket bearers included Tom Bishop, Tim
Vandermolen, Allen Helmick, Russell Helmick, Roy
Guardado, James Trujillo, and Mike Boone. Cremation
will follow the service, and ashes will be inurned
at Poplar Grove Cemetery in Goodridge.
Earl
Poppenhagen was born September 21, 1928 in Thief
River Falls, to Earl Phinnie Poppenhagen and Pearl
Clarissa Soley Lamparter Poppenhagen.
He
married LaVonne Arlene Bjerk in June, 1948 in Thief
River Falls. He joined the U.S. Army in January,
1951 and the couple moved to Alabama. Earl was an
automotive mechanic in the military. After his
discharge from the Army in 1952, the family moved
to Sidney, Neb. He worked at the Sioux Army Depot
in Sidney, and in 1968 was transferred to the
Pueblo Army Depot where he worked until retirement
in 1979.
The
family returned to Minnesota, and in 1998 Earl
moved to Ordway. He continued to work as an
automotive mechanic after his retirement. He
enjoyed gardening, and after LaVonne's death, he
learned to crochet, as well as canning and baking.
Survivors
include his mother; Pearl Poppenhagen of Thief
River Falls; one son, Brian (Pamela) of Mankato;
one daughter, Michele (Floyd) Gribble of Ordway;
brothers, Louis of El Cajon, Calif., Jim (Margie)
of Princeton, and Ronnie (Sheryl) of Gillette,
Wyo.; sisters; Faith (Isaac) Martinez of Blaine,
and Linda (Glen) Hofstad of Oklee; sister-in-law
Carol Poppenhagen and many friends.
He was
preceded in death by his father; his wife LaVonne;
one son David; and brothers Glen and Leroy.
