Thief
River Falls - Vernon Philipp, 80, died on
Saturday, August 30, 2003 at the CNC Unit of
Northwest Medical Center in Thief River
Falls. 
Funeral
services were held on Monday, September 1 at St.
John Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with the
Rev. Don Kirchner officiating. Casketbearers were
grandchildren, Derek Augustine, Susan Augustine,
Dana Shafer, Randy Shafer, Brad Philipp, Brent
Philipp, Crystelle Philipp, Sally Wolff, Lucas
Wolff and Johnnie Philipp. Interment was in
Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.
Vernon
William Philipp was born on July 22, 1923 in Grand
Plain Township of Marshall County, the son of John
and Sarah (Klockman) Philipp. He was baptized in
Germantown and confirmed at Mavie. He grew up and
attended country school in Grand Plain Township and
Goodridge High School. He also attended and
graduated from Crookston Agricultural College,
after which, he started farming. He moved to St.
Paul and worked at Swift's Meat Packing Plant
during the winter and returned to his own farm in
the summer.
On
October 22, 1950 he married Yvonne Elizabeth Mead
in Thief River Falls. The couple made their home on
the farm, where they lived their whole married
life. For 10 years, Vernon worked for Lakehead
Pipeline in Viking and spent one year in Chicago,
Ill. He returned to Minnesota in 1979, retired and
continued to farm. In the winters of 2001 and 2002,
the couple lived with their daughter in
Higginsville, Mo.
Vernon
was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. He was a
dedicated farmer, liked mechanical work, and
collected old cars and tractors. He enjoyed
spending time with his family, especially his
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors
include his wife, Yvonne of Goodridge; daughter,
Paulette (Daryl) Augustine of Higginsville, Mo.;
sons, Joe (Sue) of Goodridge, Dale (Wendy) of Thief
River Falls and Mike (Becky) of Thief River Falls;
six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a
half-brother, Glen Olson of Yuma, Ariz.
Vernon
was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters,
Edna McFarland and Estelle Houghom; six brothers,
Lawrence, James, Earl, Harry, Charles and Ralph in
infancy; and a half-brother, Carl Olson.
