Leona Peterson, 76

Grand Forks, N.D. -- Leona Peterson, 76, died on Saturday, November 10, 2001 at Valley Elder Care in Grand Forks, N.D.

Mass of Christian burial was held on Tuesday, November 13, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thief River Falls with Father Tim McGee presiding. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery in Thief River Falls.

Leona Ann Bukowski was born on June 5, 1925 in Minneota to the late Louis and Margaret (Roles) Bukowski. She moved as a child to Munich, N.D., where she attended school, graduating from Munich High School in 1943. Following high school she attended and graduated from Aaker's Business College in Fargo, N.D. Leona worked at a bank in Starkweather, N.D., and Devils Lake, N.D.

On May 4, 1948 Leona was united in marriage to John Peterson. The couple lived in various places in central North Dakota until 1953 when they moved to Thief River Falls where they raised their family. Leona was secretary and treasurer at Peterson Lumber Company since 1964.

Leona enjoyed cooking, reading books, gardening, playing Bridge and especially spending time with her grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Guild, Catholic Daughters and was the president of "Parents Group' for the Fergus Falls State Hospital.

Leona is survived by her husband, John of Thief River Falls; three children: Gordy (Margo) Peterson of Thief River Falls, Gayle (Brian) Walker of Eagan, and Brian (Cheryl) Peterson of Thief River Falls; seven grandchildren; one brother, Clement Bukowski of Munich, N.D.; one sister, Lenora (Oscar) Dammen of Starkweather, N.D.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Steven Peterson and her parents.

Casketbearers included: Jim Bukowski, Clayton Dammen, Dez Schob, Chuck Olson, Mark Enge, and Don Johnson.

Honorary casketbearers included all of Leona's family and friends.
