- John L. Oven, 83, died Sunday, August 5, 2001
at Arrowhead Senior Living Community in
Eveleth.
Mass
of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. today
(Wednesday, August 8) at Resurrection Catholic
Church in Eveleth with Father Eamonn Boland
officiating. Burial with military honors will be in
Eveleth Cemetery.
Visitation
was held Tuesday, August 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. with a
7 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary at Cron-Sheehy
Funeral Home in Eveleth. Visitation will also be
held for one hour prior to services at the
church.
John
L. Oven was born on January 23, 1918 in Eveleth,
the son of Joseph and Mary (Trontel) Oven. He
graduated from Eveleth High School in 1936 and then
worked in the Evergreen Mines near Hibbing. He
served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the
756th Field Artillery Battalion and was stationed
in the Philippines. He continued his military
career, serving in the National Guard and retiring
with the rank of major.
On
July 9, 1949, John was united in marriage to Marian
Kotnik in Eveleth. He began his career with the
Minnesota State Highway Patrol on March 16, 1948
and retired as a captain on March 14, 1948 after
serving in Thief River Falls, the Twin Cities
metropolitan area and Virginia. Marian died on
March 5, 1993.
John
was involved in numerous professional organizations
and community activities, serving on the Eveleth
school board for 12 years and the Mesabi Range
Community and Technical College board for several
years. He was a member of Mesaba Range Post 1172
Veterans of Foreign War, serving as past commander
and involved with the canteen at the Hippodrome. He
was a third degree Knight of Columbus with the
Frank A. Macina Council 2583 of Eveleth, serving as
its secretary/treasurer for many years. As a member
of Resurrection Catholic Church, he served as a
former council member and usher.
John's
other memberships included K.S.K.J. Lodge, St.
Louis Safety Council, Minnesota Retired Peace
Officer's Association and the American Legion Post
in Thief River Falls. He also taught many safety
classes and training courses and was a lifetime
member of the Arrowhead Peace Officer's Association
and the Minnesota State Patrol Troopers
Association. He enjoyed woodworking.
John
is survived by two daughters, Margaret (Tom)
Trautwein of Ham Lake and Sharon (Jere) Brueggen of
Wisconsin Rapids, Wisc.; a granddaughter; three
sisters, Mary Lushene of Eveleth, Molly Scanlon of
Pengilly and Ann (Iggy) Kramer of Gilbert; a
sister-in-law; a brother-in-law; and numerous
nieces and nephews.
He
was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two
brothers, Joseph Oven and George Oven; and three
sisters, Josephine Mihelich, Rose Whitcraft and
