Wendell Ortloff, 76

Thief River Falls - Wendell Ortloff, 76, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at Valley Eldercare in Grand Forks, N.D.

Funeral services were held obit-Ortloff Monday, March 15, 2004 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, with Rev. Mark Helgeland officiating. Casket bearers included all of Wendell's grandchildren. Interment was at Rux Cemetery in Sanders Township of Pennington County.

Wendell Vernon Ortloff was born June 29, 1927 in Sanders Township of Pennington County, the son of Andrew Louis and Florence Wilemiena (Rux) Ortloff. He was baptized on November 6, 1927 by Henry Pope and confirmed at the Mission Church in St. Hilaire. He attended Rux School in Sanders Township.

Wendell was united in marriage to Lucille Florence (Anderson) Niemela on June 15, 1978 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. They made their home on a farm in Sanders Township, Pennington County. Through the years, Wendell farmed and was employed off the farm. His last job was for Concrete Inc. He retired in 1995 after 16 years of service.

He enjoyed hunting, woodwork and music. Wendell played with several area bands over the years.

Wendell served on the Sanders Township Board for 22 years.

Survivors include step-children, Arlene (Ed) Jagol of Thief River Falls, Steven Niemela of Blaine, Ken (Deb) Niemela of Thief River Falls and Nancy (Leonard) Olson of Middle River; ten step-grandchildren; eleven step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Norma (Don) Paro of Salem, Ore.; two sisters-in-law, Grace Ortloff of Thief River Falls, and Marlene Ortloff of St. Hilaire and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille on April 28, 2002; his parents; two sisters, Irene Anderson and Esther Myhrer; and four brothers, Elroy, Raymond, Robert, and Kenneth; one niece and one nephew. A00003B2004MR17
