Lake Falls - Dr. Stephen Olson, 59 ,died
Wednesday, May 16, 2001 at his rural Red Lake Falls
home.
Mass
of Christian burial was
held
Saturday, May 19, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's
Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls with Father Tim
Bushy officiating. Polly Beyer was the pianist.
Other musicians included flutist Mary Derosier,
violinist Marjorie Schafer and trumpeter Jim
Schmitz. Special music was provided by St. Joseph's
Church Choir. Casketbearers were Roger Thibert,
Owen Nelson, Bob Schafer, Keith Mills, Otis Wilson
and Mike Anderson. Military honors were accorded by
the Red Lake Falls American Legion Post. Interment
was in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Red Lake
Falls with Johnson Funeral Service of Red Lake
Falls in charge of the arrangements.
Stephen
John Olson was born on August 24, 1941 at Grafton,
N.D., the son of Fritz D. and Jane (Kadlec) Olson.
He lived with his family in Robin, Minn. until 1951
when they moved to Red Lake Falls. He attended
school at St. Joseph's Catholic School until the
eighth grade and graduated from Lafayette High
School in 1959. Stephen entered the U.S. Navy in
1959 and was stationed in Hawaii and Japan before
his honorable discharge in 1962.
On
August 21, 1968, he was united in marriage to Susan
Bentzinger at Sioux Falls, S.D.
Stephen
earned an Associate of Arts degree from
Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay
and a Bachelor of Science degree at Bemidji State
University. After teaching social studies at East
Grand Forks Senior High School, he went to Kent
State University where he earned his master's
degree and Certificate of Advanced Studies. He then
worked for the Tennessee Department of Mental
Health in Chattanooga for three years.
In
1977, Stephen earned his Doctor of Education degree
in psychology, counseling and guidance from the
University of Northern Colorado where he also
taught for two years. He spent 15 years working as
a school psychologist in northwestern Minnesota and
since 1991, had been a psychologist at Northwestern
Mental Health Center in Crookston.
Stephen
enjoyed his farm and spending time with his horses
and cattle. He especially enjoyed spending time
with his family.
He
was a member of the Red Lake Falls Flying Club,
Lions Club where he had served as president, and
the Red Lake Falls American Legion Post. He was
very active at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where
he served on the school board and most recently,
chaired the Faith for Tomorrow campaign.
Survivors
include his wife, Susan of Red Lake Falls; a
daughter, Sarah Olson of Dilworth; a grandson; a
brother, James "Andy" (Julie) Olson of Annandale;
his mother-in-law, Louella Bentzinger of Sioux
Falls, S.D.; a brother-in-law; a niece and four
nephews.
Stephen
was preceded in death by his parents.
