Ernest Novacek, 74

Roseau - Ernest Novacek, 74, died Saturday, November 17, 2001 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, N.D.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 23, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Roseau with Father Bob LaPlante officiating. Casketbearers will be Eric Lunos, Scott Lunos, Ben Brandt, Adam Brandt, Brian Haugen, Mark Haugen, Matthew Novacek, Michael Novacek, Jason Novacek and Kevin Novacek. Military honors will be accorded by the Roseau Memorial Honor Guard. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Roseau.

Visitation will be held Thursday, November 22, from 5 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. vigil service at Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Roseau. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church.

Ernest Novacek was born on December 17, 1926 in Greenbush, the son of Joseph and Josephine (Gonshorowski) Novacek. He grew up on the family farm near Leo in Polonia Township.

In 1943, Ernest enlisted in the Navy. He fought in the South Pacific in World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946.

On September 6, 1949, he married Ida Danielson in the Catholic church in Badger. The couple raised 11 children. From 1949 until 1989, Ernest was an employee of the Roseau Electric Cooperative.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, American Legion Post 24 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Ernest received his lifetime achievement and high school diploma in 1999. He also received an award for his lifetime involvement in conservation and outdoor sports.

His hobbies included deer hunting, trapping, ice fishing and farming.

Ernest is survived by his wife, Ida; six daughters, Helen (Leland) Lunos of Roseau, Nola (Craig) Brandt of Malung, Debra (Orvis) Haugen of Grygla, Linda (Stewart) Jorgensen of Bemidji, Sara (Thomas) Herrmann of Menomonie, Wisc. and Karen Johnson of Beaver Creek, Ohio; five sons, Forrest (Linda) of Woodridge, Va., Patrick (Arlys) of Roseau, Paul (Kim) of Sterling Heights, Mich., John (Carol) of Warren and Jeffrey (Josephine) of Minneapolis; 22 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Emelia Novacek of Warren and Christine (Joe) Goroski of Baker, Mont.; and three brothers, Joseph (Darlene) and Daniel, both of Greenbush, and David (Marlys) of Lake Park.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Todd; two brothers, Norbert and Jerome; and three sisters, Theresa, Leona and Bernadette. A00003B2001NV21
