Sigri Nelson, 97

Greenbush - Sigri Nelson, 97 died Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, N.D.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 6, at 10 a.m. at Nelson Obit Gustav Adolph Lutheran Church in Strathcona with Rev. Mary Ronning officiating. Corienne Jacobson was the pianist, and Carol Coltom was the soloist. Sigri's grandchildren served as casketbearers. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Strathcona with Collins Funeral Home of Greenbush in charge of the arrangements.

Sigri Bertine Johnson was born on August 6, 1904 in Huntley Township of Marshall County, the daughter of John and Oline (Bjerland) Johnson. She and her twin brother, Julius, were baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Strandquist. Sigri attended school through the 8th grade and was confirmed in 1919 at Gustav Adolph Lutheran Church in Strathcona. At the age of 19, she went to work cooking on farms in the Stephen and Argyle areas. In 1925, Sigri went to Northwest Angle to work for her brother, Olaf, who owned a sawmill there.

On November 5, 1927, she was united in marriage to John "Conrad" Nelson at North Star College in Warren. The couple farmed in Huntley Township until their retirement in 1955. They continued to make their home on the farm until 1973 when they moved to Elderbush Manor in Greenbush. After Conrad died on March 27, 1976, Sigri continued to make her home at Elderbush Manor, residing there until December of 1999 when she moved to the Greenbush Nursing Home.

In addition to performing the chores of a farm wife, Sigri wove rugs, sewed, quilted and knitted, continuing to knit up to the time of her death.

Survivors include four daughters, Leona Good of Holt, Mich., Lenay (Jerry) Van Horn of Superior, Wisc., Adell (Walter) Miller of Greenbush, and Jeanne (Pat) Collins of Karlstad; a son, Verne (Karen) of Strathcona; a sister, Alice Garrett of Caldwell, Idaho; two sisters-in-law; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Sigri was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five brothers, Olaf, Torben, Bill, Norman, and her twin, Julius; and a sister, Rose Anderson. A00003B2002AP10
