Selmer Nelson, 87

Fosston - Selmer "Sam" Nelson, 87, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at Riverview Nursing Home in Crookston.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 9, at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Fosston with Rev. Lois Ball officiating. Interment was in Rosehill Cemetery in Fosston with Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Service in charge of the arrangements.

Selmer Nelson was born on March 6, 1914 in a log cabin near Clearbrook, the son of Emil and Nora (Ness) Nelson. He graduated from Clearbrook High School in 1932 and was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps.

On June 17, 1936, Sam was united in marriage to Frances Nyhus in Erskine. The couple made their home in Fosston. From 1945 to 1946, Sam served his country as a tank driver during World War II. He worked as a produce manager for Fairway Foods in Fosston until 1973 when he went to work for the City of Fosston as its manager of the Municipal Liquor Store. After 12 years of service, he retired in 1985. Frances died on September 29, 2000.

Sam was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fosston, serving as its secretary/ treasurer for many years. He also served as secretary/treasurer of the Rosehill Cemetery Association and was a lifetime member of Tangen-Walstrom American Legion Post 114 in Fosston.

He was active in many sports, earning many trophies in softball, bowling and golf. He was also an avid hunter. He enjoyed music and played the trombone and violin in a band with his wife. He judged fiddler contests throughout the area. Sam also enjoyed gardening, birds and playing horseshoes and cards, especially whist.

Survivors include five daughters, Carol Mandt of Seattle, Wash., Marilyn (Ed) Grove of Yorba Linda, Calif., Jeanette (Pete) Loland of Grand Rapids, Bev (Curt) Leier of Erskine and Arlys (Keith) Reitmeier of Grand Forks, N.D.; a son, James (Cindy) of Thief River Falls; 25 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Henry Nelson, Walter Nelson and Bill Krohg; and four sisters, Ethel Forsberg, Arvilla Enloe, Agda Klinke and Arnelda Southworth.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Edwin; a sister, Victoria; a son-in-law, Gordon Mandt; and a grandson, Kevin Reitmeier. A00003B2001JN13
