Newell Nelson, 88

Thief River Falls - Newell Nelson, 88, died Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 10 Nelson, Newel obit a.m. on Friday, February 9, at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls with Rev. John Wollenzien officiating. Ida Nordvall was the organist, and the soloist was Vanessa Anderson. Casketbearers were Conley Nygaard, Larry Nelson, Wayne Koland, Neil Nelson, Steven Kaushagen and Michael Kaushagen. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls. Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Newell Albin Nelson was born on March 15, 1912 at Viking, the son of George and Ida (Halvorson) Nelson. He attended school in Viking and at the age of 14, moved with his family to homestead a farm in Numedal township of Pennington county.

On June 27, 1952, he was united in marriage to Alice Tunheim. The couple farmed and raised their family in Numedal township. They sold the farm in 1973, and in 1978, they built a home two miles east of Thief River Falls. Alice died in 1992, and Newell entered the CNC unit at Northwest Medical Center in 1999.

He was a former member of Melo Lutheran Church, rural Warren. Newell was also a member of the Eagle's Club in Thief River Falls.

He enjoyed deer hunting, gardening, caring for his yard and farming.

Newell is survived by a daughter, Linda (Steven) Kaushagen of Thief River Falls; a son, Neil (Wanda) Nelson of Thief River Falls; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lorraine Baumeister of Duluth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sons, Norman and David; and two brothers, Wilfred and Rueben.
